Induction Period

What

As a new member of our team, we know that in order to understand our functioning and our expectations of facilitators you will need time and a great deal of support. You may or may not have had previous experience with key elements of our approach, such as student (and facilitator!) self-direction, sociocracy, or NVC (Nonviolent Communication), so it’s essential for us that by the end of your induction you feel comfortable in your role as facilitator, and you have the necessary tools to relate with children and parents from a place of calm and self-assurance.

The most relevant topics we will be covering in the induction program are detailed in our Professional Development Plan.

Our induction program is based on mentoring, support and professional development training.

Why

The core goals of this program from the perspective of a new facilitator are:

  • confidence: I can do it and I have the support to continue learning.

  • alignment: I feel aligned with the school’s approach to education and can confidently convey it to students and parents.

  • instructional practice: I can respond to the diverse learning needs of my students with effective strategies.

  • commitment to continuous learning: I want to continue learning and growing as a facilitator in collaboration with my students, colleagues, administration, parents and school community.

How

During your first term at Kaleide:

  • You will be matched with a mentor for the first 30 days following your enrollment. This mentor is a more experienced educator who will assist and support you in your professional development through modeling, guided reflection on practice, and feedback on your daily practice. This will expand your repertoire of professional skills and your understanding of our child-centered approach. You will be offered opportunities to meet with your mentor to share successes and trouble-shooting strategies.

  • You will be supported in order to set goals for your Individual Learning Plan (ILP). Together with your mentor you will collaboratively develop the ILP within the first 60 days of your enrollment. The ILP will help us find the most appropriate training to support you in your role at Kaleide.

  • You will take part in workshops and training. These professional development opportunities will provide you with vital information and tools that are relevant in your role as facilitator.

  • Your progress will be assessed. In order for you to gain an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses and to grow professionally, it is important for you to participate in an assessment administered by the school during your induction period. This assessment will be based on the knowledge and skills covered in this program.
